Cebu cops slay 3 drug traffickers

THREE armed suspected drug traffickers who shot and seriously wounded an anti-narcotics agent in Talisay City  in Cebu on Friday morning were killed in a shootout with officers who tracked them in their hideout nearly 10 hours later, Police Regional Office 7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas announced yesterday.

Suspects Ramonito Manija alias ‘Dueterte,’ Arnel Hernane alias ‘Alvin’ and one alias ‘Joseph’ died whle being taken to a local hospital by officers who engaged them in a shootout in Sitio Bliss in Barangay Lawaan 3 in Talisay City at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

In a report to Philippine National Police chief, Director General Oscar D. Albayalde, Sinas said the three were identified as the gunmen who shot it out with members of the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Talisay City Police Station in Sitio Mananga in Bgy. Tabunok at 3 a.m. Friday injuring Police Officer 1 Jay Taping.

The official said combined elements of the Provincial DEU and the Provincial Intelligence Branch of the Cebu Police Provincial Office located the suspects’ hideout in San Jose Village in Lawaan 3 with the help of information from barangay officials.

Officers were approaching the gunmen’s hideout when they came under fire from a ‘lookout’ who rushed inside the house. Sinas said his men pursued the suspect and eventually shot him and two others dead following a brief gunbattle.

Three chamber-loaded caliber .45 pistols were recovered at the scene of the clash.

The official said PO1 Taping positively identified Hernane as one of the gunmen who shot him.  PO1 Taping, a member of the Talisay City Police DEU suffered
a gunshot wound in the chest and was initially taken to the Talisay District Hospital for treatment before being transferred to another hospital for further medical treatment after being already declared in a stable condition.

According to Sinas, PO1 Taping and his colleagues were conducting surveillance on a suspected drug den in Sitio Mananga when they were fired upon by the suspects.

Other officers rushed the wounded policeman to the hospital as reinforcement rushed to the site to track down the suspects who fled on foot.
