A WEDDING reception in San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan on Sunday night turned into a tragedy when a policeman went on a shooting rampage killing the bride’s brother and injuring the groom, Bulacan Police Provincial Office director Col. Chito Bersaluna said yesterday.
Slain was Margarettee Cleavan Rosal, the 26-year-old brother of the bride, while wounded was newly-wed Reggie Tulosa.
The victims were shot by Patrolman Jessie Gubat, 27, a member of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group assigned with the CIDG Cabanatuan office in Nueva Ecija and residing at TC 11, Bgy. Citrus, San Jose del Monte City.
An initial investigation conducted by the San Jose del Monte City Police Station headed by Lt. Col. Orlando Castil Jr. showed that at around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday, Pat. Gubat appeared in front of the house of the victims, where the wedding reception was being held, and immediately shot Rosal but missed and instead hit Tolusa in the right thigh.
Gubat escaped. Rosal reportedly went after the cop and caught up with him in front of the suspect’s house, where he was repeatedly shot by the policeman. The victim died on the spot.
Bersaluna said that Gubat was also shot by an unidentified suspect.
Gubat and Tulosa were taken to the Sapang Palay District Hospital for treatment.
Other reports said that the cop went to the reception site and looked for Rosal who was then singing a karaoke song. After finding his target, the policeman reportedly opened fire without any provocation before fleeing on a motorcycle.
Rosal, joined by some men reportedly went after the cop, triggering the shooting incident in front of the lawman’s house, where Rosal was killed.
Police are investigating who shot Gubat who will be facing charges for murder and frustrated murder.
An old grudge was said to have triggered the gun attack.
