A 32-YEAR-OLD policeman on Friday shot himself dead while sitting on the stairs of his house in Lanao del Norte.
Patrolman Joseph Sherwin Daligdig of Purok 5, Bgy. Baybay in Tinagsa, Kolambugan, Lanao de Norte died on the spot.
According to Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office director Col. Rene Solidarios, Daligdig’s father, Abrelito, 61, reported his son’s death to the local police.
The father said before the alleged suicide, his son showed signs of depression but they never knew he was already thinking of ending his life.
Solidarios said the victim, who was assigned to the Lanao del Norte PPO’s Personnel Holding and Administrative Unit, used an unlicensed 12-gauge shotgun in killing himself.
The victim sat on the stairs of their house while nobody was looking at him before aiming the shotgun on his neck and pulling its trigger at 6:40 a.m. on Friday.
Solidarios said the victim’s father was the first to rush to the scene after hearing the gunfire.
Investigators from the Lanao del Norte PPO’s Crime Laboratory recovered at the crime scene an unlicensed 12-gauge Azar Karatex Taktik shotgun and one ammunition case with 17 live shotgun bullets and a spent casing.
The body of the victim was taken to a local funeral parlor for autopsy.
Police Regional Office 10 director Brig. Gen. Rolando Anduyan has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, including on what prompted the policeman to take his own life.
