A notorious commander of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) was killed in a shootout with government forces serving warrant of arrest against him yesterday morning in Antipolo City.
The fatality was identfied as Armando Lazarte alias Pat Romano, concurrently an Executive Committee member of Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee(STRPC) and a secretary of sub - regional military area 4A of the organization.
Reports from Camp Aguinaldo showed that the rebel leader was killed when he resisted arrest and shoot the arresting team composed of combined elements of police and military.
The shootout occurred at around 2:00 am in the rebels’ safehouse located at Bgy. Cupang’s Sierra Vista Subdivision , Antipolo City.
The report said combined AFP and PNP forces served warrants of arrest for murder and frustrated murder against the suspect.
According to Lt Col Christopher Diaz, Commander of the 80th Infantry Battalion (IB) the terrorists opened fire at the arresting officers which triggered the shootout.
“Alias Pat Romano is a notorious NPA Commander who has led the burning of equipment at the Kaliwa Dam project in Infanta, Quezon early this year and the series of ambush utilizing land mines against the PNP in Baras and Antipolo City last 2018.” he said.
Col Alex Rillera, Commander of the 202nd Brigade claimed that after the exchange if fire troops applied first aid to the rebel and brought him to the hospital.
“security forces applied first aid to the wounded terrorists who were then brought to Amang Rodriguez Hospital where they were declared Dead on Arrival by the attending physician.” he said.
Government troops recovered one M16 rifle, one 9mm pistol, one cal .45 pistol, two hand grenades, laptops, cellphones and voluminous enemy documents which are now being processed by Rizal Provincial Police Office’s SOCO.
