ANGELES CITY – A police major deployed for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games on Monday night was arrested for shooting dead his own mother and wounding his teenage nephew in their house at Sitio Pader in Bgy. Pulung Maragul, this city.

Acting city police director Col. Joyce Patrick Sangalang identified the suspect as Maj. Dante Cabungcal, the deputy chief of police of Talavera Municipal Police Station in Nueva Ecija.

Cabungcal and his live-in partner, Connie Brillo, were having a heated argument in their room around 4:30 p.m. on Monday when he fired multiple shots hitting his mother Purita and his 17-year-old nephew.

The suspect’s brother, Raul, told investigators that Purita was knocking on the couple’s door to mediate and pacify them. Instead of opening the door,  Cabungcal fired at the door, killing his own mother and injuring his nephew.

The wounded nephew ran outside the house but the suspect’s mother died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds.

Lawmen from the Police Station 3 responded to the crime scene and operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics also arrived. The suspect, who holed himself up in his room with Brillo, refused to surrender.

Sangalang arrived and was able to convince Cabungcal to give up.

Before the surrender, the suspect requested the presence of the media.

Recovered from the suspect’s room were a Steyr cal. 9mm pistol with four live ammunition and his service firearm Pietro Beretta cal. 9mm with 15 live ammunition.

Personnel of the Scene of Crime Operatives also found at the crime scene nine fired cartridges and nine deformed slugs for cal. 9mm.

Cabungcal was brought and detained at the Police Station 3.
