Dragon boat sinks off Boracay, 7 dead

AT least seven persons of a dragon boat team were killed while 14 survived when their vessel capsized off Boracay Island yesterday morning.

The boat capsized yesterday morning at Sitio Lingganay, Bgy. Manoc-manoc, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan.

Initial reports from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said that the boat had 25 occupants when it capsized after encountering huge waves at around 7:40 a.m. Those rescued were brought to the Saint Gabriel Hospital by the PCG  for examination.

The fatalities were identified as Arcob Comar,  John Vincent Natividad,  Mark Vincent Navarrete,  Johann Tan,Maricel Tan, Rachel Montoya, Antonette Supranes and  Von Navarossa.

A survivor said the boat was about 300 meters away from the shore of Tulubhan when water filled their 20-seater dragon boat.

Some were reportedly able to hang on to the boat while others chose to swim back to the shore.

It was learned that the team was training for an international competition.

As of this writing, search and rescue operations are still being conducted by the PCG.
