A BUY-BUST operation in Mandaue City in Cebu early yesterday morning turned into a gunfight when the suspect used his vehicle to ram two arresting police officers, Police Regional Office 7 director Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas said.
Members of the Mandaue City Police Office led by Col. Jonathan Abella were about to arrest 38-year-old Jason Villa, a resident of Bgy. Capitol Site in Cebu City, after he sold shabu to an undercover officer on A. S. Fortuna Street in front of the Cebu Home Builders in Bgy. Banilad at 8:50 a.m. yesterday.
An undercover officer introduced himself as a policeman shortly after the drug deal was consummated. The suspect, who was in a Toyota Rav4, refused to yield peacefully and instead stepped-on the gas and bumped two policemen.
Villa managed to drive in a short distance and shot it out with the lawmen when cornered.
The wounded suspect was taken to the Chung Hua Hospital for treatment while the injured policemen were brought to the Mandaue City Hospital.
Recovered during the operation were one heat-sealed plastic sachet containing suspected shabu, a cal. .38 snub-nosed revolver with several live ammunition and a marked P1,000 bill.
The suspect’s vehicle was impounded by the police.
In Lucena City in Quezon, another suspected drug pusher on Tuesday was killed in a shootout with police operatives conducting a drug buy- bust at Purok Masagana, in Bgy. Ibabang Iyam.
Quezon police director Col. Audie Madrideo said suspect Arnold Garcia Bathan alias “Buboy,” 42, a resident of the village, suffered fatal gunshot wounds and died instantly.
The official said the shooting was triggered by the suspect’s strong resistance when about to be collared by the operating policemen of the Lucena City Police Station under Lt. Col. Reydante Ariza.
The suspect was having drinks with a companion when an officer who acted as buyer arrived.
The policeman managed to buy 0.30 grams of shabu from the suspect in exchange for a marked P500.
Bathan sensed he was dealing with a cop. He grabbed a sling bag placed over the drinking table and opened fire.
Officers retaliated killing the suspect on the spot.
