Dump truck blown up by rebs at Albay airport site

July 27, 2019

DARAGA, Albay- Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels used an improvised explosive device (IED) to blow up  a dump truck owned by EM Cuerpo Builders Inc. at a quarry site in barangay Gabo where the Albay International Airport approach here is being constructed.

Police Major Rebellion Betita of Daraga town MPS said armed rebels ordered the dump truck driver to get out of the vehicle and explode the truck with IED, at about 9 a.m. on Friday.

Police Col. Wilson Asueta, police director for Albay province, said the terrorist act will not be an intimidation to delay the Albay International Airport construction with a target date to make it operational by 2020.

Asueta said although there are Army and PNP outposts at the airport construction site in barangay Alobo and nearby Bascaran, Daraga town, the police will step up patrols in villages near the airport, to deter rebel attacks.

It would be recalled that in Sept. 2017, communist rebels attacked the Albay International Airport construction site in barangay Alobo, Daraga town, wherein rebels burned five heavy equipment and vehicles of the EM Cuerpo contractor at the cost of several million pesos.
