Ex-barangay chief held for drugs, 6 others for illegal logging, gambling

CAMP Dangwa, La Trinidad, Benguet -- Police Regional Office-Cordillera (PRO-COR) director Chief Supt. Rolando Z. Nana announced yesterday that PRO-COR’s intensified campaign on special laws led to the arrest of seven individuals for committing various crimes over the week.

Chief Supt. Nana said a drug surrenderer and a former barangay chairman of Bgy. Lan-ag, Lacub, Abra, was arrested in a buy-bust operation in Bgy. Linasin, Bangued. He was identified as John Roosdee Jueves Balaoag, 31. Seized from him were P24,000 in boodle money and four heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets of suspected shabu.

During the anti-illegal logging operation, three suspects were separately nabbed in the act of cutting trees without pertinent documents after a concerned citizen informed the police about their illegal activity.

Responding policemen arrested Johnny Mon-ey Mara, 55, and Jovern Tayaban Kindipan, 21, in their residence in Marivic, Sapid, Mankayan, Benguet. Seized from them were two pieces of pine trees.

Meanwhile, one Domingo Layet Bitaga was likewise apprehended at Docos, Sagada, Mt. Province. Recovered from him were two pieces of Benguet pine lumber worth P8,322.

Nana said three more were arrested for violation of the cockfighting law in Sitio Gawa, Paykek, Kapangan, Benguet on Thursday afternoon. Arrested were Jimson Atiwen Chanfing, 35, Donar Felix Pulac, 43, and Wilbert Mitwa Espital, 44.

Confiscated from them were six live roosters, a record book for bets and bettors and bet money amounting to P490 in different denominations.

The suspects were placed under the custody of the concerned operating units after charges were filed against them.
