Farm maintenance crew killed in Albay shooting

A 31-year-old maintenance crew of the Granja Organica Farm in Daraga, Albay was shot to death by a co-worker at the height of their brawl last Wednesday, a Police Regional Office 5 report said yesterday.

Roland Berango suffered gunshot wounds in different parts of his body and died on the spot during the incident which took place inside the farm in Purok 2, Barangay Anislag in Daraga municipality at 1 a.m. Wednesday.

PRO5 director, Brigadier General Anthony S. Alcañeses, said , the suspect identified as Christopher Guerrero,38, a caretaker of the same farm and residing in nearby Zone 6 surrendered to local barangay authorities.

An investigation showed that local barangay captain Elmer Lodronio sought the assistance of the Daraga Municipal Police Station in investigating the homicide case. When officers arrived at the farm, local barangay officials presented Guerrero to them.

The man immediately confessed that he was the one who shot and killed the victim and voluntarily surrendered the firearm used in the killing: a caliber .22 revolver with five live ammunition and four spent cartridges.

The investigation showed that the suspect was sleeping inside the guard house when he was roused from his sleep when somebody pelted the window with a stone.

When he left the guard house to investigate, the suspect said he was surprised when Berango suddenly hacked him although he evaded the attack. The suspect said he was forced to defend himself from Berango until he managed to wrestle a gun from the latter’s possession and fired repeatedly at the maintenance crew.

Police investigators said an old grudge is believed to have triggered the brawl.

In Iriga City, local policemen are also still investigating the case of one Nolito Biasca, a 51-year old resident of Zone 2, Bgy. Perpetual Help who was found dead with multiple hack wounds past 8 p.m. last Tuesday.

The motive and identity of the killer remained unknown as of yesterday.
