BONGABON, Nueva Ecija – A 69-year-old farmer, already suffering from lung illness, was burned and eventually died of suffocation after his clothes caught fire while he was burning rice straws in his farm here on Saturday.

Police Major Manuel Catacutan, provincial information officer, identified the victim as Renato Fernandez Sr., of Bgy. Sinipit, this town.

His body was found in the rice field at 4:45 p.m.

Investigation showed the accident occurred while the victim was disposing of rice straws in his farm.

The farmer was burning the rice straws when his clothes accidentally caught fire, causing burn injuries in different parts of his body. This also caused the victim to suffocate, said Catacutan.

“Based on information gathered, the victim was weak and was suffering from lung illness.”

He said they have already requested for an autopsy of the victim’s body, which was then brought to the Vilar Funeral parlor in Bgy. Palomaria.
