ORIENTAL Mindoro Provincial Prosecutor Josephine Caranto-Olivar is in critical condition after she was shot several times while on her way home yesterday morning.
Olivar was attacked in Bgy. Bayanan 1 in Calapan City. She was immediately taken to the MMG Hospital for treatment.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to join the investigation.
“She’s still in the hospital fighting for her life. We don’t have enough info yet about the possible motive. I have instructed the NBI, through Director (Dante) Gierran and the regional director, to immediately gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation,” Guevarra said.
Justice Undersecretary Mark Perete said the female prosecutor will undergo a CT scan and surgery.
“Prosecutor Jo had to undergo a CT scan. She sustained five gunshot wounds. Two in the head and three in the body. She will have to undergo an operation,” Perete said.
“The Department calls on our law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident and those responsible may be held to account before the law. In the meantime, we ask for prayers for the safety of Prosecutor Olivar and her family,” Perete added.
Police Regional Office 4-B director Brig. Gen. Tomas Apolinario Jr. said the motive and identities of the suspects are being investigated.
Olivar was the 2nd official to be shot in Mindoro island since last Saturday.
