Fire hits Japanese-owned resort

FIRE of still unknown origin struck a mountain resort in Maria, Siquijor owned by a Japanese national early morning yesterday, police said.

Police Regional Office 7 director, Brigadier General Debold M. Sinas said that the fire destroyed six cottages worth at least P300,000 at the resort in Barangay Cantugbas in Maria municipality owned by Japanese national Kiichiro Asaoka.

The fire which was believed to have started at 12:20 in the morning and was declared under control by the local fire bureau two hours later.

Sinas said that local police and fire personnel led by Police Master Sergeant Christopher Atay rushed to the site after getting a call from Bgy. Captain Roger Amantiad.

He said that the cottages were easily consumed by fire as they were made of cogon, bamboo and wood which were all light combustible materials.

The origin of the fire is still being investigated as of press time, he said.
