Fishermen net P218-M cocaine off Sorsogon

POLICEMEN acting on a tip from local fishermen on Monday noon recovered 12 boxes containing some 39 kilograms of cocaine worth P218.4 million in Gubat, Sorsogon.

Police Regional Office 5 director Brig. Gen. Arnel Escobal said three of the 12 boxes were found by fishermen Melvin Gregorio, Loubert Ergina and John Mark Nabong as they were fishing in the waters off Bgy. Bagacay in Gubat municipality.

The fishermen reported their find to the local village chief, who  in turn informed officials of the Gubat Municipal Police Station of the presence of the suspected drugs.

Officers who rushed to the site found nine small boxes and three big boxes containing the substance.

The boxes were turned over to the Sorsogon Crime Laboratory for   analysis and examination.

Escobal thanked the local residents who immediately reported their drug find to the local police.  
“We have accounted for another huge volume of drugs with the help of a vigilant community and are again calling on the public to seek our help in case they spot suspected floating cocaine in their areas,” said the Bicol police director.

Last May 17, a cocaine brick worth nearly P5.5 million was also recovered by two fishermen in Bgy Nagcalsot in Rapu-Rapu, Albay.

The drugs were immediately turned over to the local police.

More than P1 billion worth of floating cocaine was recovered in different parts of Bicol, Caraga and Visayas region since last year.   With Zaida delos Reyes
