Fugitive ex-cop nabbed for teen housemaid’s rape

PHILIPPINE National Police chief, General Debold M. Sinas yesterday announced the arrest of a dismissed policeman wanted for raping his 18-year old household helper in Iloilo in 2010.

The top cop said that suspect Leonaldo Soberano, now 58, was arrested by members of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group headed by Brigadier Gen. Jonnel C. Estomo at no. 863 corner Diamond and Petal Streets in Barangay San Agustin, San Fernando City in Pampanga Friday noon.

The suspect was arrested on the strength of a warrant of arrest for rape issued by Judge Antonio Natino of the Iloilo City Regional Trial Court Branch 26 and another warrant of arrest for attempted homicide issued by the Iloilo City Municipal Circuit Trial Court.

According to Gen. Sinas, members of the AKG Visayas Field Office followed Soberano’s tracks in different parts of Luzon until a tip led them to his whereabouts in San Fernando City. A caliber .45 pistol and an airsoft gun were recovered from the suspect’s possession.

“There is no escaping the law because we are relentless in pursuing criminals and fugitives from justice,” the PNP chief said.

Brig. Gen. Estomo said that the suspect went into hiding after a warrant for his arrest was issued by an Iloilo City court in connection with the rape of his young housemaid.

The suspect will be presented to the Iloilo courts for issuance of official jail commitment order, said Estomo.
