PRESIDENTIAL daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte prefers an all-gender CR contrary to the opinion of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, of having a separate comfort room for members of the third sex.
Mayor Duterte said having a separate restroom for members of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer and others (LGBTQ+) is simply discrimination or segregation.
The Davao mayor, a supporter of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Gender Expression (SOGIE) bill, was asked to comment on the issue involving a transgender woman who was not allowed to use a female CR inside a mall in Quezon City.
“This is the best but to be strict about non-discrimination, CRs should not be LGBTQ but for all genders single individual use because an LGBTQ CR is in itself discriminatory for segregating,” Duterte said.
“That cannot be exclusive for LGBTQ because that in itself is discrimination, because we segregate,” the founder and chairperson of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) added.
She said unless a member of the LGBTQ underwent sex change, he should be barred from using public comfort rooms for women.
“GBTQ who have not yet undergone sexual reassignment may use single individual women’s CR but not multi-individual CR.
This is to protect women from men pretending to be GBTQ just to access the women’s CR,” she said.
Last week, alleged transgender Gretchen Diez was barred by a janitress from using the “she” toilet at a Quezon City mall.
The janitress recently came out in public to clarify that two women had complained that Diez queued for the use of one of the cubicles. She called Diez’s attention, advising the person to use the male rest room, which also has a private cubicle.
Earlier, PBA party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles proposed an all-gender CR in all buildings in order to prevent such misunderstanding.
According to Mayor Duterte, an all-gender CR is not new as many small restaurants are having common CR.
“That can be an option, an all-gender individual CR. Like how we can do it with PWD. Like how small restaurants do it,” she said.
President Duterte supports the idea of separate restrooms for the members of LGBTQ.
