Man in Silawan case to be tried

A MAN who confessed he was obsessed with the late 16-year old Christine Lee Silawan when he abducted and killed her last January 13 in Lapu-Lapu City will be tried for murder  as recommended by the local prosecutor’s office, Police Regional Office 7 director, Brigadier General Debold M. Sinas said yesterday.

The decision by the Lapu-Lapu City Prosecutor’s Office to file a murder case against Renato Llenes came even as the same dismissed the case filed by the National Bureau of Investigation against the 17-year old ex-boyfriend of the victim whom the NBI had arrested and detained for lack of probable cause.

Sinas said that Lapu-Lapu City Prosecutor Ruso Zaragoza made it clear that the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office headed by Colonel Lemuel Obon had provided sufficient circumstantial evidence and a witness to indict Llenes apart from the latter’s extra-judicial confession.

The local police had presented witnesses who claimed to have seen both Llenes and Silawan on the day the girl was killed and her face skinned off. The police also found out that Llenes exchanged facebook messages with the victim using the picture of a younger-looking guy and acquired CCTV footages showing the two together before her body was discovered.

Llenes surrendered to the police and confessed he murdered and skinned the victim last January 13. The 42-year old suspect turned out to be included in the drugs watch list of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office.

“The suspect confessed that he was the one who killed Silawan and made an extra-judicial confession,” the official said.

According to the official, the suspect confessed he has a fetish for having sex with young girls, Silawan included, and days before abducting and killing her had ‘fantasized of going to bed with her.’

The suspect is also facing charges for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition after officers found a gun in his house in Barangay Bankal in Lapu-Lapu City.

Sinas said that officers went to the suspect’s residence to question him regarding his possible involvement in the Silawan case but ended up taking him to the local police station after they discovered a loaded caliber .45 pistol in the area.

The arrest of the adult suspect came after the NBI last March 15 arrested a teenager who was accused of killing Silawan.
