Debold M. Sinas

A 30-year-old man who toyed with a ‘pistol’ in a beach resort in Maria, Siquijor causing alarm to local and foreign tourists in the area on Wednesday morning was arrested and jailed by responding policemen, Police Regional Office 7 director, Brigadier General Debold M. Sinas said yesterday.

Sonny Boy Tabaña, an information technology personnel residing in Barangay Binuongan in Enrique Villanueva, Siquijor is now facing criminal charges for alarm and scandal and violation of the gun ban under Republic Act 7166, the official said.

According to Sinas, members of the Maria Municipal Police Station led by Executive Master Sergeant William Dayao and Staff Sgt. Rolly Magsayo rushed to the Salagdoong Beach Resort in Bgy. Olang after receiving a phone call regarding the presence of a man playing with a gun at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday.

The official said that the officers caught the suspect in the act of cocking what turned out to be a gun replica which alarmed tourists who saw him.

Sinas said that the suspect will be taught a lesson that possession of a gun replica during the election period is a prohibited offense which would land him in jail. Apart from that, he said that the suspect’s act obviously triggered an alarm among tourists in the beach resort who apparently thought that the man was toying with a real gun and would later go on a shooting rampage.
