MILF member wanted for kidnapping nabbed

September 26, 2019

PHILIPPINE National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) director Col. Jonnel Estomo yesterday announced the capture of a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front wanted for kidnapping-for-ransom in Mindanao.

In a report to PNP chief General Oscar Albayalde, the official identified the suspect as Nasirin Baladji alias “Zaed,” an MILF member and Islamic preacher tagged as the no. 3 most wanted kidnap suspect of the PNP-AKG Mindanao Field Unit.

“We have accounted for another most wanted kidnapper in Mindanao after six months of surveillance. This is part of our ongoing stepped-up manhunt operation to account for most wanted kidnappers in the country, including those hiding in the Southern Philippines,” said Estomo.

The suspect was arrested in his house at Purok C in Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay by members of the PNP-AKG Mindanao Field Unit headed by Col. Alex Fulgar and the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office at 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Baladji was caught on the strength of a warrant of arrest for kidnapping-for-ransom issued by Judge Vicente dela Plaza of the Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay Regional Trial Court.

The official said that the suspect was wanted for the October 7, 2015 kidnapping of Rolando del Torchio in Dipolog City; the abduction of Elmer Romoc and his family on August 5, 2015 in Dipolog City; and the kidnapping of Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani in Jolo, Sulu on June 12, 2012.

On December 4, 2013, Atyani escaped from his captors in Patikul, Sulu after 18 months in captivity.

Atyani and freelance Filipino television crew members Ramil Vela and Buboy Letrero were seized by suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen on June 12, 2012 while they were to work on a film documentary about the notorious extremist group.

Vela and Letrero were freed by their captors.
