A NEW PEOPLE’S ARMY (NPA) amazon surrendered to the government forces the other day in Occidental Mindoro.
This was confirmed yesterday by Capt. Jayrald B. Ternio, spokesperson of Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry Battalion.
Alias Laura yielded her M16 rifle to the elements of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division at Bgy Batongbuhay, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro on Monday.
Lt . Colonel Mario Lito Rerirva, commamding officer of 76 Infantry Battalion (IB) said that while in the communist group, Laura operate in the northern areas of Mindoro Island as lead extortionist.
Laura claimed that the NPAs are making false promises to cover the rampant corruption within the organization which is among the major reasons why she turned her back from their armed struggle.
Alias Laura also revealed that the NPAs are actively recruiting and encouraging the youth to abandon their families and take up arms against the government.
The statement of alias Laura supported the security sector’s claims during the recent series of public hearings held at the Senate.
Colonel Antonio R Lastimado, commander of the 203rd Infantry Brigade which has operational jurisdiction over Mindoro, encouraged the few remaining NPAs in Mimaropa Region “to lay down their arms, return to mainstream society and enjoy the benefits and grants provided under the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.”
“This surrender is a clear indicator that the NPA terrorists’ senseless armed struggle is now close to its end,” he added.
Since January 2019, a total of 196 former rebels have already surrendered to the government forces in Mindoro.
