A village chief was shot dead by suspected members of the New Peoples’ Army ( NPA) in front of his wife and father-in-law in Hilingos, Leyte Saturday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Virigilio Loquas, barangay captain of Bgy. Sto. Niño in Hilingos.
According to 8th Infantry Division of Philippine Army spokesman Major Bard Ceasar B. Mazo, the victim was fishing together with his wife and father-in-law around 1:30 p.m. when three armed men arrived and shot him.
After the incident, the suspects fled leaving the victim’s companions unharmed.
Maj. Gen. Pio Q Diñoso III, commander of 8ID, condemned the killing.
“The 8ID strongly condemns the murder of barangay captain Virgilio Loquias by the members of CPP-NPA terrorists and a clear manifestation of gross violation of human rights.
“The Philippine Army together with the Philippine National Police will be objective in its investigation to ensure that justice is served. We extend our condolences and prayers to the bereaved family,” Diñoso said.
The military said the gunmen claimed the victim was the one who tipped off the authorities who raided the rebels’ camp.
