P11M smuggled cigarettes seized in Zamboanga

AUTHORITIES seized some P11 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in an operation at the Zamboanga City port.

Naval Forces Western Mindanao  commander Rear Admiral Rene Medina said the tobacco products were confiscated in a joint operation on Saturday.

The raiding team was composed of members from Field Station Zamboanga; Naval Intelligence and Security Group-Western Mindanao (NISG-WM); Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 9, Intelligence Service AFP, Port Police; Marine Battalion Landing Team-11; the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and  coordinated with the personnel from Coast Guard Station Zamboanga and Bureau of Customs.

The operation led to the confiscation of 12,640 rims of imported and various brands of cigarettes.

The smuggled items were loaded on MV Kristel Jane 3, a passenger vessel that came from Jolo, Sulu.

Medina said the smuggled tobacco products will be brought to the Bureau of Customs office for safe keeping.
