Policeman arrested over lawyer’s slaying

AGENTS of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the Police Regional Office 4-A and the Rizal Police Provincial Office yesterday morning arrested a member of the Rodriguez Municipal Police Station accused of involvement in the killing of a lawyer.

Police Corporal Alberto Umali was taken into custody after officers who raided his house at Blk. 20, Lot 1, Summitview Subdivision in Bgy. San Rafael in Rodriguez at 6 a.m. yesterday recovered one M1-6 automatic rifle, 52 live 5.56 ammunition, four spent M-16 casings, 36 spent 9mm cartridges, 12 rounds of cal. .45 cartridges, and a black cartridge case.

In a report to PNP-CIDG director Maj. Gen. Amador Corpus, CIDG Region 4-A chief Col. Lawrence Cajipe said that they raided the policeman’s house on the strength of a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013.

The search warrant was issued by Judge Cynthia Marino-Ricablanca of the Sta. Cruz, Laguna Regional Trial Court.

PRO4-A director Brig. Gen. Edward Carranza said the recovered evidence will be subjected to a ballistics examination by the PNP Crime Laboratory to determine if they will match other evidence found in previous gun-related killings in the region.

Officials said that Umali is a “person of interest” in the killing of attorney Edilberto Golla  in Bgy. San Isidro in Rodriguez municipality last May.

The 45-year-old victim was riding a car when shot dead by a motorcycle-riding gunman in Eastwood Greenview Subdivision.

Investigators recovered 42 spent casings at the scene of the murder.
