A SERIES of major anti-narcotics operations in SOCCSKSARGEN region resulted in the killing of an armed drug trafficker in a shootout, the seizure of around P40,000 worth of shabu and the uprooting and destruction of millions of pesos worth of fully-grown marijuana plants and seedlings, Police Regional Office 12 director Brig. Gen. Alfred Corpus said yesterday.
Corpus said that suspect Zaldy Gumban Santos, a 43-year-old resident of Purok Pag-asa in Bgy. Lumakil, Polomolok, South Cotabato was killed in a firefight with undercover officers in Bgy. Rubber.
The suspect had just sold a packet of shabu to a poseur from the Polomolok Municipal Police Station Drug Enforcement Unit when he sensed the entrapment and tried to shoot the lawman but missed.
Back-up operatives returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Polomolok Municipal Hospital.
Recovered from the slain suspect were one cal. .38 revolver with five live ammunition and a spent cartridge, 13 heat-sealed plastic sachets containing some P12,000 worth of the “poor man’s cocaine” and the marked money paid to him by the undercover agent.
Corpus said that a second suspect, Samsudin Dimao, 43, a resident of Abadilla Subdivision in Purok 11, Bgy. Poblacion, Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat, was arrested in a sting.
Seized were some P35,000 worth of shabu.
Members of the South Cotabato Police Provincial Office and the Tampakan Municipal Police Station, in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, also swooped down on a marijuana plantation site in the area and uprooted multi-million peso worth of cannabis.
Corpus said that the prohibited crops were found planted in Sitio Datal Alyong in Bgy. Danlag, Tampakan town.
The suspected marijuana cultivator identified as Gugwelin Macondon was not around during the operation and is being hunted.
Dimao and Macondon are facing charges for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
PRO12 has jurisdiction over the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and General Santos City.
