A MERITORIOUS promotion awaits the brave non-commissioned officer of the Manjuyod Municipal Police Station in Negros Oriental who singlehandedly shot it out with four suspected New People’s Army rebels who tried to divest him of his service pistol last Thursday, Police Regional Office 7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas said yesterday.
Senor Police Officer 2 Humphrey Teves became the toast of the Central Visayas police after he did not lose his composure when he was confronted by the four suspected NPA guerrillas who were on an ‘Agaw-Armas’ mission at the public market in Barangay Bantolinao in Manjuyod municipality around 9:30 a.m. last Thursday.
Sinas said that the four gunmen approached the policeman who was then in civilian attire and buying goods at the market and at gunpoint ordered him to hand to them his pistol. However, instead of obeying the gunmen’s order, the policeman drew his service firearm and engaged the armed men in a shootout.
One of the suspects who was armed with a caliber .45 pistol was shot dead by the cop. He also hit a second gunman in the leg but the wounded suspect was dragged away by his two companions as they escaped on foot leaving behind their dead comrade.
Sinas said that the still unidentified slain suspect was found carrying a loaded cal. .45 magazine, a cell phone and other personal belongings. His firearm was believed to have been taken away by the other suspects as they fled.
Sinas said that SPO2 Teves, the finance police non-commissioned officer of the Manjuyod police station was unhurt in the shootout.
The official said that local police and the military confirmed that the four suspects are new recruits of an NPA Sparrow Unit tasked to assassinate soldiers and policemen and steal their weapons. “These rebels are going after every target of opportunity, targeting one or two soldiers or policemen,” he said.
Sinas said that members of the Manjuyod police led by Inspector Kelvin Roy Mamaradlo are still tracking down the rest of the suspected NPA rebels as of press time.
