GUMACA, QUEZON— Quezon Rep. Angelina ‘Helen’ Tan yesterday cried foul over graft and partisanship charges hurled against her husband, a regional director of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The physician- solon issued the statement after Lopez town Councilor Arkie Manuel Yulde on Thursday filed a complaint agaunst DPWH Region 1 Director Ronnel Tan before the Office of the Ombudsman for grave misconduct, corrupt practices, conduct unbecoming a public officer, and involvement in partisan political activities.
In his complaint, Yulde mentioned an incident in February where Dir. Tan allegedly held a lavish birthday party at his residence in Quezon and “threw cash in the air” for his guests.
The complaint also mentioned that Tan had a “huge house” at a posh subdivision in Quezon City.
Yulde also alleged that the DPWH official had prevented and even threatened several barangay officials from attending meetings or conferences.
“I decry this move by certain political sectors who are out to besmirch the good name and reputation of our family who have done nothing but to be deeply involved in the lives of our people through the delivery of meaningful public service,” Rep. Tan said.
The congresswoman said she welcomes the opportunity to prove the charges wrong in the appropriate forum.
For his part, Dir. Tan in a phone intetview categorically belied the charges.
“Firstly, I celebrated my birthday on February 23 in our Manila residence only with my family. There were no visitors.
Secondly, all our properties including our houses are legitimately acquired and I can prove that. And lastly, I never meddle with politics”, said Tan.
He stressed that the filing of charges against him is not surprising since his wife is a likely candidate for Quezon governor in the 2022 polls.
“Matagal na pong nakarating sa amin ang banta na sisiraan at sisirain kami kapag hindi aatras ang aking asawa”, Tan lamented.
