Reb killed in Mindoro clash

FIGHTING erupted between patrolling security troops and a band of New People’s Army guerrillas in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro shortly before noon Wednesday leaving one rebel dead, Police Regional Office 4-B director, Brigadier General Tomas C. Apolinario Jr. said yesterday.

The official said that combined operatives from the Army’s 76th Infantry Battalion, the Oriental Mindoro Police Provincial Office’s 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company and the PRO4-B’s 404th Regional Mobile Force Battalion were on patrol in Sitio Pamuwisan in Barangay Loyal in Victoria municipality at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday when they encountered around 30 heavily-armed rebels believed belonging to the NPA’s Kilusang Larangan Gerilya Central.

The gunbattle which lasted for 25 minutes resulted in the killing of a still unidentified gunman whose body was found at the scene along with one M-14 rifle with bandolier, two improvised explosive devices and 200 linked rounds of live M-60 ammunition.

Apolinario said that security forces are still tracking down the rest of the guerrillas who fled on foot.
