Rebels kill Agusan Norte cop

SUSPECTED New People’s Army guerrillas shot dead a policeman in Carmen, Agusan del Norte when he tried to fight their attempt to kidnap him Wednesday evening, officials said yesterday.

Police Executive Master Sergeant Jimmer Omisol suffered gunshot wounds in the body and died on the spot after trading shots with heavily-armed NPA gunmen who tried to snatch him in Barangay Tagcatong in Carmen municipality at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Police Regional Office 13 director, BGeneral Gilbert DC Cruz who led the entire Caraga police force in condemining the latest NPA atrocity in the region.

“The entire police force condemn in the strongest manner the latest hostility launched by the CPP-NPA on PEMS Jimmer Omisol. This dastardly and barbaric act proved that there is no justice and rule of law in the armed struggle,” Cruz said in a press statement.

An investigation conducted by the Carmen Municipal Police Station showed that the victim had just arrived in Bgy. Tagcatong when three armed men tried to grab him as he left his car.

Police said that sensing his life is in grave danger, the cop drew his firearm and fired at the armed men. At least five other gunmen joined in the shooting spree which led in the killing of the policeman.

“The rebels tried to kidnap our police officer but sensing he’s in danger, he was able to shoot and hit his assailants as evidenced by the bloodstains at the waiting shed where the five NPA members serving as look outs were waiting. Although outnumbered, the hero cop fought until his last breath,” Cruz said.

The Caraga police director also rejected the claims of Agusan NPA spokesperson Ka Omar Ibarra that Omisol was targeted by the rebels for his involvement in illegal activities and inhuman treatment of crime offenders locked up at the Carmen detention facility.
