Solons rename Mactan-Cebu Int’l airport

IN honor of the country’s first  hero, the House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a measure renaming Mactan-Cebu International Airport as Lapu-Lapu-Cebu International Airport.

House Bill 9198 easily got the majority votes because lawmakers realized that Lapu-Lapu should be given importance and be recalled by Filipinos.

The corporate body administering the airport, which is the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority, shall also be renamed as Lapu-Lapu-Cebu International Airport Authority.

Renaming of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport  Authority would carry the name of the native chieftain who is considered as the country’s first hero.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) was created by Republic Act (RA) 6958.

MCIAA carries the name of the airport that it administers, which is located in Lapu-Lapu City.

Principal author, Cebu City Rep. Raul Del Mar said the city was named after the native chieftain Lapu-Lapu who is regarded as the country’s first hero for repelling the Spanish invader Ferdinand Magellan.

To honor Lapu-Lapu and be consistent with the city’s name and location of its airport, the change of airport name and the corresponding change in the name of the authority will serve two purposes.

“This will give Lapu-Lapu the recognition that the outstanding Filipino deserved, and in the same thrust, improve the choice of name,” Del Mar said.

Furthermore, Del Mar said it is prudent and beneficial to keep the name “Cebu” in the airport name and the name of the authority that manages it.

He said that “Cebu” is better known in the world historically, economically and culturally.

Del Mar cited the importance of “Cebu” which serves a crucial function for branding and as locator of the airport as destination for tourists and other visitors.

As provided under the bill, the Act shall take effect 15 days after its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation.
