Spaniard El Nido theft victim

POLICE yesterday arrested a male housekeeper in El Nido, Palawan who was found to have stolen the P161,000 of a 48-year old Spanish businessman staying in the world-famous beach resort, a Police Regional Office 4-B report said.

Romel Dedace, 25, is now facing a theft case following his arrest upon the complaint of Ivan Plaza, a resident of Castella 59, Madrid, Spain, said PRO4-B director, Brigadier General Tomas C. Apolinario Jr.

According to Apolinario, the arrest of the suspect stemmed from the complaint of the Spanish national who discovered that the money he kept inside the safety box in his room at the Jerchris Pension House in Sitio Nasigdan, Barangay Villa Libertad in El Nido was missing.

The official said that the complainant went to the El Nido Municipal Police Station at 2:55 a.m. yesterday to report the theft incident. An investigation showed that the victim left his room to have dinner and used the room’s safety deposit box to store his money.

When he returned an hour later, he discovered that his money was already missing.  Apolinario said that El Nido police investigators eventually found out Dedace, the pension house’s utility personnel, was the only person who holds the duplicate keys of the rooms in the establishment.

Apolinario said that officers who searched the room of the suspect found his backpack containing the stolen money prompting them to make the arrest.

The suspect is now being held at the El Nido police lock-up facility.
