SAN FERNANDO, Camarines Sur -- The suspect in the brutal rape-slay of a six year-old girl here was brought before the municipal trial court on Wednesday morning, after he surrendered to authorities on Tuesday.

Police Captain Emilio Alejandria Endrano, acting chief of police, identified the suspect as Gilbert Olitoquit Zantua, a local farmer in the remote village of Mara-ngi here.

Endrano said at least three witnesses identified Zantua as the person of interest in the brutal rape-slay case in this locality.

On Wednesday the family of the elementary pupil Baby Jasmin Arendoria Bellien had laid the victim to rest at the San Fernando town Catholic cemetery, with her parents saying, “at least we are consoled by the surrender of the suspect, despite the brutality that untimely ended the life of our daughter.”

Baby Jasmin was found dead and with signs of sexual abuse on the morning of Oct. 2, in a grassy area of Barangay Mara-ngi, after the minor was reported missing on the evening of Oct. 1.

She was last seen alive when her mother brought her to her afternoon class at Mara-ngi Elementary School nearly 2 kilometers from the victim’s home.
