SAN JOSE CITY – Police have arrested the alleged gunman in last week’s assassination of a forest ranger of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Nueva Ecija during manhunt operations conducted in nearby Rizal town on Tuesday.
Authorities identified the arrested suspect as Eugene Cayabyab, 46, of Bgy. Calaocan, Rizal town.
Cayabyab allegedly turned out to be one of three men who were earlier arrested for illegal logging charges in Bgy. Portal, Rizal on Oct. 22 or three days before the shooting of slain DENR forest ranger Ronaldo Corpuz, 43, of Zone 6, Bgy. Villa Joson, this city.
After their arrest, however, Cayabyab and his two cohorts, identified as Jayson Padiernos and Rodolfo Quimado were able to post bail after being slapped with violation of P.D. 705 before the provincial prosecutor’s office.
DENR-PENRO chief Joselito Blanco earlier said that the killing of his subordinate could be job-related because he was instrumental in the said anti-illegal logging operation in Rizal town which led to the trio’s arrest and the seizure of some 472 board feet of illegally-sawn timber loaded in a mini Elf-truck.
Quoting his Wednesday’s talk with Lt. Col. Bruno after Caybayab’s arrest, Blanco said yesterday that there were witnesses who came to the police and positively identified the arrested suspect as the alleged gunman.
