GAPAN CITY – Patrolling operatives on Monday shot dead a 23-year-old tricycle driver for refusing to stop after being flagged down for routine inspection in this city.
City police head Supt. Criselda De Guzman identified the fatality as Edison Isidro alias “Tone” of Purok 4, Ramirez Extension, Bgy. Aduas Sur, Cabanatuan City.
Isidro’s father, Eduardo, 51, came to the police and positively identified his son at the morgue. He agreed to have his son’s remains autopsied, said De Guzman.
Operatives were manning their post at a checkpoint on Maharlika Highway in Bgy. Bayanihan at 4:30 a.m. yesterday when the tricycle-driving suspect was flagged down for inspection.
Instead of pulling over, the suspect suddenly made a u-turn and opened fire at the police, triggering a brief chase and an exchange of gun fire until the suspect was cornered in Bgy. San Nicolas.
De Guzman said the gunfight continued as lawmen took cover behind their Mahindra patrol vehicle and kept firing until the suspect was neutralized.
Recovered at the clash site were the suspect’s cal.38 gun with two live ammunition and four spent shells, a Kawasaki Bajaj tricycle, four spent shells for cal.9mm pistol, a sling bag containing OPPO cellphone, medicine and black wallet with P70 in cash.
