A member of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed while a lady fighter was wounded and arrested in an encounter with government forces the other day in Talipao, Sulu.

Identity of the slain bandit was not yet available as of press time.

Arrested was Nursaina Jarad Sahi, wife of a militant who was wounded during the firefight.

Major Arvin Encinas said the encounter occurred at aroubd 3:20 p.m. in the jungle of Talipao, Sulu.

Encinas said soldiers from the 2nd Special Forces Battalion were conducting combat operation at Sitio Kan Pataw, Barangay Upper Sinuman when they encountered at least 30 terrorists.

A firefight ensued and lasted for 20 minutes and resulted to the killing of one bandit and arrest of a female fighter.

During the clearing operation, troops also recovered one M16 rifle with an M203 Grenade Launcher and one Galil rifle with an M203 Grenade Launcher.

Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr. launched a tactical offensive when they encountered the bandits.

“It is unfortunate that Abu Sayyaf terrorists continue to endanger the lives of their own family and friends, like Ms. Nursaina. I feel sorry for her that she was abandoned, wounded and helpless during the firefight,” Vinluan said.

He attributed the operational gains to the cooperation and support of the Tausug community who reported the presence of militants in the locality.

For his part, Western Mindanao Command commander Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said the troops conducted a legitimate tactical operation in the area.
