NPA rebs go on rampage, burn equipment in Misamis Oriental

NEW People’s Army guerrillas went on a rampage in Misamis Oriental this week burning several heavy equipment owned by two companies in the province, a report to Camp Crame said yesterday.

Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, around 14 heavily-armed NPA rebels stormed a quarry site in Purok 5, Bgy. Napaliran in Balingasag and set on fire a backhoe and dump truck worth around P10 million.

The leftist gunmen, some of them women carrying assault rifles, swooped down on the quarry site carrying dried palm leaves which they used in torching the two heavy equipment.

Police Regional Office 10 director, Brigadier General Rolando B. Anduyan said that shortly after the arson, the fleeing gunmen encountered members of the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office.

After the nearly hourlong exchange of gunfire, the guerrillas retreated leaving behind three backpacks containing assorted personal belongings and an M-16 automatic rifle.

The attack came barely two days after another group of NPA gunmen torched three dump trucks and a coaster worth more than P20 million in Bgy. Bulahan, Claveria.

A PRO10 report said about 13 armed NPA rebels flagged down the drivers of the vehicles at gunpoint in Bgy. Tipolohan 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and set the vehicles on fire before fleeing on foot.

Anduyan said he has ordered Misamis Oriental police director, Colonel Robert Roy Bahian to thoroughly investigate the twin arson attacks and track down the perpetrators who were believed to have carried out the violent moves following their failed extortion try on the owners of the two companies. The rebels did not hurt any civilian during the two incidents.

All local police forces were also alerted for more similar NPA offensives in the province and other parts of the region and to watch out for possible diversionary moves and ambuscades.
