NPA ‘sniper’ kills Surigao del Norte cop

A SUSPECTED New People’s Army (NPA) sniper shot and killed a policeman answering the call of nature at the back of their camp in Bacuag, Surigao del Norte around 9 a.m. Tuesday before fleeing, the Police Regional Office 13 said yesterday.

PRO13 director, Brigadier General Romeo M. Caramat Jr. said that Patrolman Bryan Gregorio, a 32-year-old member of the Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Mobile Force Company, suffered a gunshot wound in the abdomen and died while being taken to the Bacuag Health Unit for treatment.

Initial investigation showed the policeman was at the back of the camp when he was hit by a bullet. His colleagues said they heard a burst of gunfire near the premises of their camp before the victim collapsed, all bloodied up.

The shooting incident occurred at the 2nd PMFC headquarters in Sitio Kugtong, Barangay Poblacion, Bacuag municipality which is known for having a considerable presence of NPA rebels.

Officers recovered four spent M-16 casings in a spot located around 40 meters away from the camp, Caramat said

The initial information we gathered is that the victim was shot by an NPA sniper although our office is still conducting a thorough investigation into the incident,” said Caramat.
