CHERRY Nunag might be the missing piece of the Perlas Spikers’ puzzle to grab the elusive PVL championship.
After parting ways with PetroGazz, Nunag on Tuesday night announced her commitment to play for the Perlas Spikers, the only independent club in the now-pro league.
“I chose the Perlas Spikers over other teams na nagooffer kasi tuwing lilipat ako ng team, lagi ko talaga tinitignan yung mga kasama ko,” said Nunag through her new management agency Virtual Playground.
“Mahirap din naman maglaro kung hindi ka kumportable sa mga makakasama mo so looking at the Perlas lineup, every time na nakikita ko sila, magaan ang loob ko sa kanila kahit hindi ko man sila ka-close o nakalaban ko man sila in the past, at kahit na halos wala pa akong naka-teammate sa kanila, very excited ako sa complete fresh start na kasama yung buong team,” she added.
Nunag’s move to Perlas came a day after the Angels’ other middle blocker Jeanette Panaga has signed with powerhouse Creamline.
A former La Salle-Dasmariñas standout, Nunag was grateful for the opportunity to play for PetroGazz, where she won a championship (Reinforced Conference) in 2019, forming a solid frontline with Panaga.
“Sobrang thankful ako na naging part ako ng family ninyo (Angels),” said the 5-foot-11 Nunag.
“I think hindi ko na mae-experience sa iba ang na-experience ko dito, although I’m excited to make new memories with my new team, I will always treasure my expriences and journey with PetroGazz,” she added.
Since joining as one of the founding clubs in the PVL in 2017, the hard-luck Perlas Spikers’ have yet to make it to the biggest stage.
The Perlas Spikers missed the podium in the 2019 Reinforced Conference and savaged the bronze medal in the Open Conference, the league’s most recent tournament before the league went on a hiatus last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Nunag will boost the Perlas’ middle, which has Kathy Bersola, Sandy Delos Santos, Nette Villareal and Erika Alkuino.
“What can i contribute? Isa kasi sa mga butas din ng Perlas ay yung middle. Kathy (Bersola) is very good, personally isa siya sa mga lagi ko pinaghahandaan, nakaka-challenge talaga siya,” said Nunag.
“So now na magiging teammate ko siya, i’m sure ang dami ko din matututunan sa kanya. Hopefully, when Kathy rotates, papasok ako, ready ako punan yung blocking at iba pang skills para maging strong ang middle game ng Perlas,” she added.
“And isa pa, yung pagiging vocal ko and passionate sa game, hopefully mai-contribute ko to elevate the energy ng team tuwing naglalaro.”
PetroGazz, meanwhile, has started to fill the gaps left by Nunag and Panaga by acquiring University of the East stalwart Seth Rodriguez.
The Angels are expected to announce their roster moves in the coming days.
Jovy Prado, Jonah Sabete and Kai Baloaloa also had their contracts with PetroGazz expired last Dec. 31.Publication Source : People's Tonight
