MORE than P1 billion worth of agricultural products have already been damaged and lost due to the onslaught of typhoon Ulysses in several regions in the country.

In its Bulletion No. 10 on typhoon Ulysses, the Department of Agriculture reported that the total damage has reached P1.17 billion, affecting 49,237 farmers and 54,043 hectares of agricultural areas.

The volume of production loss was recorded at 67,330 metric tons affecting commodities include rice, corn, high value crops, fisheries, and livestock in Cordillera Autonomous Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON and Bicol Region.

The DA added that there were also reported damages and losses in fisheries property and equipment, irrigation facilities, and agricultural infrastructures.

The increase in values, the DA said, is attributed to updated reports from the Cordillera Autonomous Region, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, and Bicol Region.

Meanwhile, the affected DA Regional Field Offices are continuously conducting assessment and validation operations on the damage and losses in the agriculture and fisheries sector.

The DA, on the other hand, assured affected farmers and fishers that there is available assistance for them which include the prepositioning of rice, corn and assorted vegetable seed reserves from DA RFOs; drugs and biologics for livestock and poultry; Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program of Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC); and indemnification fund from Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to pay for the losses incurred.
