Parents play key role in children’s education – Roque

Parents play an important role in children’s education, especially in their moral upbringing and preparing them for real life.

UniTeam senatorial candidate Harry Roque stressed this even as he urged parents to closely monitor their children’s learning, especially during online classes.

“Ang mga magulang ay dapat binubusisi unang-una, ang mga curriculum dahil hindi po naman puwede ang moral upbringing sa subject matter learning. Pangalawa, importante na busisiin din natin ‘yung mga textbooks na ginagmit ng ating mga anak,” Roque said.

“Importante na po ang ating mga anak ay hindi lang po natuto ng mga kurso kung hindi natuto sa totoong buhay,” he stressed.

If elected, Roque said he would introduce a bill highlighting the importance of the parent-teacher partnership. He also vowed to provide the necessary funds for the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) activities so that parents would not always pay.

“Kinakailangan kasama na po sa pondo na ibibigay ng ating pamahalaan ‘yung necessary allocations to fund a secretariat, to fund the activities of the PTA dahil it really is a shared obligation between schools and the parents,” he told an online forum of PTA National Philippines Tuesday.

“I will be your advocate in ensuring that the PTA bill will also be translated into law by the Senate,” the former presidential spokesperson added.

In the 13th Congress, a bill seeking to “encourage the active participation of parents and teachers in the total development of students as they go through elementary and high school education” was filed in the Senate.

In the 18th Congress, a bill aimed to “institutionalize Parent-Teacher and Community Associations (PCTAs) to better focus and direct their efforts to improve their children’s success, both in school and outside of it.”

However, both proposed measures did not pass into law.

Roque said that the national government should support all PTAs nationwide.

“I reiterate my conviction that the PTAs are very important in the holistic education of our children, therefore, government must bend to support the PTAs nationwide,” he said.
