Passenger with P.5-M cash stopped at NAIA 3

Cash

A DEPARTING passenger bound for Japan was flagged by the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) after he was found to be carrying cash with an estimated total value of ₱500,000.

It was learned that on September 16, 2024, the passenger, whose name is being withheld, was caught during security screening at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.

Said passenger was held when his bag was found to be containing the large amount of money while he was bound for Osaka, Japan via AirAsia Flight number Z2 188.

Security Screening Officer (SSO) Ronnel Bustamante was reportedly conducting x-ray screening when he noticed a suspicious image on the x-ray monitor.

This prompted him to call the attention of SSO Rechelle Odencio, baggage inspector, to conduct verification, during which they found five bundles of 1,000 peso bills inside the passenger’s bag.

The SSOs immediately coordinated with the Philippine National Police, which in turn, coordinated with the Bureau of Customs (BOC). The passenger was turned over to the BOC for proper disposition.

OTS Undersecretary Crizaldo Nieves commended the SSOs for their diligence in thwarting attempts to exploit the transportation system for illegal activities.

“SSOs work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the security of travelers. Their dedication, attention to detail, and professionalism are crucial in preventing security threats and keeping airports secure,” Nieves said.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas regulations prohibit the bringing out of Philippine money in excess of P10,000.
