PDL Engage in Sports to Beat the Summer Heat in Iligan City Jail

As the summer season ushers in sweltering heat, Iligan City is experiencing elevated heat index levels. In response to this, the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory has taken an innovative approach to keep Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) comfortable and engaged during the hottest hours of the day.

A summer league for volleyball and basketball has been organized, with games taking place in open spaces to allow PDL to enjoy a healthy dose of physical activity while combating the intensity of the weather. Additionally, billiards and table tennis tournaments are being held at the Multi-Purpose Hall, offering further opportunities for PDL to step out of their dormitories and enjoy recreational activities in a cooler and more comfortable setting.

In collaboration with the Welfare and Development Office of the facility, the Life Project for Youth (LP4Y) is also organizing a volleyball tournament specifically for youth PDL. LP4Y, a global organization dedicated to the sustainable inclusion of marginalized youth, operates a program within the facility aimed at empowering young individuals. The program focuses on equipping youth with skills, confidence, and opportunities to achieve professional and social inclusion. By fostering personal development and providing a supportive environment, LP4Y helps participants build a brighter future.

JCINSP CARMELO A CORSAME, City Jail Warden, shared, “This summer league is not just a way for PDL to stay active, but also an effort to create a supportive and positive environment despite the challenges of confinement. It’s about building camaraderie and promoting their well-being.”

The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from the participants, fostering not only fitness and sportsmanship but also a sense of community and resilience against the summer’s oppressive heat. Such programs highlight the importance of holistic care for PDL and create a meaningful impact on their daily lives.
