Pinoy Pride: Actor Van Ferro Nominated again for a BroadwayWorld Chicago Award

Van Ferro

Van Ferro set to become first actor of Filipino descent to win BroadwayWorld Chicago Awards back-to-back.

“This is a call to BIPOC actors, especially of Southeast Asian descent, in Chicago: the door is now wide open, all we need to do is to walk in,” Ferro says.

Chicago, IL. BroadwayWorld, the leading theater news website in the United States, announced today that Filipino-American actor Van Ferro has been nominated for at the regional Chicago BroadwayWorld Awards: for Best Supporting Performer in a Play for his critically-acclaimed performance as John N. Fail in Oil Lamp Theater’s Failure: A Love Story.

This is Ferro’s second consecutive nomination in the category. He won two award categories last year, making him the first actor of Filipino descent in Chicago to win two awards in the same season. “Thank you for the recognition of my work in Chicago theater for the past year. I already consider the nomination a great honor so far in my career because it shows my parents that they were not wrong in sending me to the USA. This is a call to BIPOC actors, especially of Southeast Asian descent, in Chicago: the door is now wide open, all we need to do is to walk in.” In another first, Ferro is one of two actors of Filipino descent nominated this year. Jay Espano, artistic director of PrideArts, is also nominated this year for Best Direction of a Musical in PrideArts’ Girlfriend.

Playing against type consistently and outside his usual range, Ferro essayed the role of John N Fail. “Van Ferro is comical as the short-wit John N,” raves Rick McCain of Let’s Play Theatrical Reviews. The play itself was rated as Recommended by the same publication, as well as by the renowned Chicago theater scene website Theatre in Chicago. Alongside Ferro, Kendal Romero was nominated for Best Performer in a Play in Failure: A Love Story as well. “Kendal and I have worked since we were starting in Chicago theater, and it is high time she received recognition for her landmark performance,” Ferro muses. Failure: A Love Story has 11 nominations at the BroadwayWorld Awards as well: apart from Ferro and Romero, it was also nominated for Best Play, Best Director in a Play (Xavier Custodio), Best Performer in a Play (Trevor Earley), Best Supporting Performer in a Play (Philip Macaluso, Jasmine Robertson, Jordan Zelvin), Best Scenic Design (Jay Pastucha and Ellen Markus), Best Sound Design (Jay Pastucha) and Best Lighting Design (Hannah Wien).

Apart from these award-nominated turns, Ferro remained as one of the busiest actors in Chicago theater, also appearing in A Theater in the Dark’s Murder in the Court of Xanadu, Cock and Bull Arts’ The Octopus; Act Your Page’s productions of Bernard Slade’s Same Time, Next Year (as George), and Lucas Hnath’s The Christians (as Pastor Joshua); a cameo role in Sigman Brothers’ first play In Memoriam, and a supporting turn as Chef Hans in Christmas Sonata (Sigman Brothers). This past calendar year, Ferro also continues his commercials and industrials with leading brands such as Sam’s Club, Kohls, and Calypso Lemonade. Ferro is currently non-exclusively multi-listed with The Talent Networks, Stavins Talent, Lori Lins, Ltd., and DreamTeam Talent. He is exclusively represented in the Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati and Columbus markets by Helen Wells Agency.

Winning this year will make Ferro the first actor in Chicago to win back-to-back awards. He will be following, among others, previous winners and talented Filipino actors Rachelle Ann Go’s 2018 win at the UK/West End edition of the BroadwayWorld Awards, Vincent Evangelista’s 2017 win at the Houston edition of the awards, and Jaycee Macapugay’s 2019 win at the Berkshires edition. Voting ends December 31, 2022. The winner of the awards will be announced some time in January 2023.
