AMBASSADOR to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez yesterday said Filipinos are expected to benefit from the immigration policy changes that will be implemented by the administration of newly sworn-in President Joe Biden.
In an interview on ABS-CBN’s Headstart, Romualdez said “One of the first things that the Biden administration would like to do is to start bringing back DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and also the other visas that will allow Filipinos to come here, to study, to work here…the H1b visas, all of that will most likely come back.”
He explained the Democratic Party has always been known to believe that immigrants make a country or has made the US.
The ambassador cited that there are a lot of Filipino-Americans in the US that have been very successful in all the fields.
“… and in fact, like what happened here during the pandemic, it was the Filipino nurses that were really in the forefront of this fight and they were very much appreciated.”
During the first day in office of Biden, he signed 17 executive orders, including six immigration-related directives, reversing Trump’s immigration agenda.
With the new immigration executive orders, the so-called “dreamers” numbering about 700,000 in the US will be protected, travel and immigration restrictions on nationals of 13 countries mostly African and Muslims were also reversed.
DACA, which was instituted during the Obama administration in 2012, is a kind of administrative relief from deportation. It protects eligible immigrant youth who came to the United States when they were children from deportation.
