Priest from Cebu takes own life; Archdiocese asks for prayers

A CATHOLIC priest based in Cebu City has taken his own life.

This was confirmed by Archbishop Alberto Uy, after police investigation showed that Fr. Decoroso Olmilla committed suicide reportedly due to health issues.

The Archdiocese of Cebu meanwhile asked for the public’s empathy and prayers.

Uy expressed extreme sadness on the part of the Archdiocese for the passing of the said priest and thanked authorities for their careful and truthful study and probe of the incident.

It was learned that Olmilla, 68, a resident priest of San Fernando El Rey Parish in the town of Liloan, was found lifeless inside a condominium in Brgy. Mabolo, Cebu City on November 12.

“We invite everyone to pray that Fr. Cocoi may in the end find peace with his Creator,” Uy appealed, as he also requested for the public to respect the privacy of the priest’s family as they mourn their loss at this time.

“As we mourn, we also humbly ask forgiveness for the wounds that this death may have caused on the faith of the faithful. In humility, we can only continue to trust that God’s mercy may remain greater than our human failures,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uy stressed the Church’s teachings regarding the sanctity of life and that no one can take life which comes from God.

He said: “no one has the right to take away what God has alone given.. every life is sacred.”
