PUV consolidation deadline on April 30 is final – DOTr

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) said that the extended public utility vehicle (PUV) consolidation deadline set on April 30, 2024 under the PUV Modernization Program (PUVMP) is final.

Prior to this, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Wednesday recommended to DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista to extend the deadline for the said consolidation of PUVs with cooperatives or corporations.

Bautista said the new deadline is final and that the DOTr will no longer recommend for the President to extend it anew.

The DOTr Secretary said that in their view, the additional three months is enough to consolidate the PUVs.

“I think three months is more than enough time for them to consolidate… what we are really after is those who are willing to consolidate,” he said.

“After April 30, we will no longer recommend an extension. This is already the eighth extension,” he added.

Bautista also said that the implementation of the PUVMP would have pushed through even if the nationwide consolidation rate is just 76 percent, which is enough to implement the program.

With the extension of the deadline, Bautista said the consolidation rate is expected to reach 85 percent.

“At 85%, I’m very sure this will be a very successful project,” he said.

It will be recalled that the deadline for the PUV consolidation formally ended on December 31, 2023 but some transport groups hace asked for an extension of the deadline.

The extension, Bautista said, is meant to give operators who intend to consolidate but did not make it to the deadline the chance to comply.
