‘Quinta’ threatens Bicol, red alert up

A “RED alert” was raised across Bicol due to a low-pressure area (LPA) which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Lagazpi City said the LPA that could develop into a tropical depression (TD) and will be named “Quinta”, is expected to threaten the Bicol peninsula by Sunday.

Gremil Naz, OCD spokesperson, in an interview on Friday, said the weather disturbance is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains and winds that could trigger floods, mudflow, storm surge, and landslide in low-lying and slope areas in Bicol.

At a briefing on Thursday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecast that TD Quinta would move towards Bicol and will likely affect the region from Sunday until Monday.

PAGASA, in its advisory, said Quinta might make landfall somewhere in Sorsogon on Monday morning.

Under the Red Alert status, various local disaster councils across Bicol were advised to closely monitor PAGASA advisories while response agencies were placed on standby for the possible deployment of assets and resources, once the weather disturbance worsens, Naz said. Philippine News Agency
