HOUSE Majority Leader and 1st District Leyte Rep. Martin G. Romualdez on Monday afternoon turned over relief goods and other essential items to Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and five other lawmakers to help their constituents severely affected by recent successive strong typhoons that hit the Philippines.

“This is in response to the malasakit (compassionate) fund drive of Speaker Velasco to aid typhoon victims,” Romualdez, chairman of the powerful House Committee on Rules who celebrated his 57th birthday last Saturday, told Velasco in a simple ceremony held at the North Lounge of the House of Representatives.
“In celebration of my birthday, I am reminded to give back to the people who were victimized by recent calamities. This event (turnover of relief goods) is a simple message that we are here for our people,” said Romualdez, a lawyer and both President of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) and Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa).
“I am hoping that the spirit of bayanihan and malasakit will continue to guide all public servants and stakeholders in our common goal to emerge victorious during these uncertain times,” Romualdez stressed whose district in Leyte, especially Tacloban City was battered by Yolanda, the most powerful typhoon ever recorded in recent history to make landfall on November 8, 2013.
Romualdez also held separate turned over on Monday afternoon relief goods and other essentials to Catanduanes Rep. Hector Sanchez, Cagayan Rep. Samantha Louise Vargas Alfonso, Rizal Rep. Fidel Nograles, Bulacan Rep. Jonathan Sy-Alvarado, and Quezon City Rep. Precious Castelo whose districts were hit by the recent typhoons.
“We are always committed to aid our kababayans in ways that we can. The times may be uncertain and difficult but our spirit of service to the people shall persist,” Romualdez said.
Romualdez donated sacks of rice, boxes of canned goods and cup noodles, solar lights, face shields, and face towels to six lawmakers led by Velasco.
During the turnover, Romualdez also reiterated his unequivocal support to the leadership of Velasco aimed at ensuring the approval of bills that will help the country’s economy and protect the people from the effects of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) and calamities.
“You (Speaker Velasco) can count on our solid support throughout your term and we will work hard to ensure the passage of the President’s priority bills,” Romualdez said.
