Rookie cop shoot self by accident

A MEMBER of Highway Patrol Group (HPG) was injured after he accidentally shot himself using his personal firearm inside his residence in San Juan City Monday night.

Report gathered at the Eastern Police District (EPD) identified the cop as Pat. Mark Caranto ,24, ,assigned at HPG- National Capital Region (NCR).

Caranto was rushed to the San Juan Medical Center after sustaining gunshot wound on his abdomen. He underwent operation and reportedly on a stable condition.

Police Staff Master Sargeant Gerard Crisostomo of San Juan Police said the incident happened inside the cop’s residence at No 94 Road 1, Ist West Crame St, Bgy West Crame, San Juan City at around 11 pm.

Crisostomo said the cop just came home from his duty and was removing his calibre .45 from the holster tucked on his waist.

The gun accidentally fell on the ground and went off hitting Caranto on his abdomen.

The cop’s live-in partner who was with him when the incident happened immediately sought assistance from Barangay officials who rushed the victim to the  hospital.

Crisostomo said the .45 caliber firearm of Caranto is not his service firearm.

“Yung baril nya hindi sya official firearm na inisyu ng PNP sa kanya kundi personal nyang baril, dahil baguhan syang pulis wala pang isyu na firearm sa kanya,” Crisostomo said in a phone interview.

Police also said the firearm of Caranto will be subjected for ballistic examination at Camp Crame.

They are now conducting investigation on the incident.
