AN unattended backpack was found at Siargao Airport on May 31, 2025 and has been successfully returned to its rightful owner.
According to Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) spokesman Eric Apolonio, personnel from the CAAP Security and Intelligence Service and Eagle One identified a red and black backpack left unattended in the airport’s waiting area at around 4:20 p.m.
The incident was immediately reported to the Aviation Security (AVSEC) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units which responded by sending teams that promptly conducted standard inspection procedures, including a K9 sweep.
Apolonio said these protocols are implemented in compliance with ICAO Annex 17 and aligned with the airport’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP), ensuring global standards for threat management are upheld.
After confirming that the bag posed no security threat, authorities conducted an inventory of its contents, which included a laptop, power bank, cameras and other personal items.
The following day, on June 1, 2025, the backpack was successfully claimed by its rightful owner, a male Singaporean national.
Apolonio said CAAP commends the swift response and coordination of airport security personnel and reiterates its continued commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all airport passengers and staff.
It also reminds the traveling public to remain vigilant and to keep their belongings attended at all times.
