Sinas orders probe on shooting of Manila cop

NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office director, Major General Debold M. Sinas, yesterday ordered a thorough investigation into an incident in Tondo, Manila which resulted in the shooting of a Manila policeman last Saturday.

Following the incident, he also called on all Metro Manila policemen to be rational and maintain their calm in dealing with any situation.

He referred to the incident inside a house in E. Rawes Street in Road 10, Barangay 123 in Tondo around 5:40 a.m. Saturday  which led to the shooting of Chief Master Sergeant Edgardo Balabay of the Manila Police District Station 7.

The man who allegedly shot the cop, one Geraldo Millares escaped  on foot and is still being hunted as of press time.

An initial investigation showed that the policeman was surprised to see his girlfriend Elaine Debusada talking with Millares inside her room when he came to visit the woman.

Irked by the presence of Millares, the cop reportedly berated the latter until Millares reportedly grabbed the policeman’s gun. At the height of their scuffle, the gun went off hitting the cop on his right thigh, the bullet exiting at the right leg of the victim.

Members of the Don Bosco Police-Community Precinct have launched a manhunt for Millares. The Manila police are also investigating the actual relationship of the personalities involved in the incident including their present civil status.

Following the incident, Gen. Sinas reminded his men to maintain their composure at all times and to always be rational when confronted by a circumstance like that of Balabay.

“As police officers, we are trained to be strong, brave and heroic but at the same time, we must remain calm, be active listeners, and non-judgmental in order to make better decisions,” he said.
